The Full Cost of Oil in America

The cause and effect how we use oil in American reveals both triumph and tragedy. Petroleum has been both a blessing and a curse for America. We comprise less than 5 percent of the world's population, but consume 25 percent of all oil produced or about 20 million barrels or 840 million gallons. Since 1751 when the Industrial Revolution began we used the amount of fossil fuels burned that is equivalent to all plant growth on Earth for the last 13,300 years. We use this black gold there's no end to the stuff, though experts estimate we've got 50-100 years' supply left at current consumption rates. The world is currently consuming oil at the rate of 30.2 billion barrels per year. Based on the forecasts 50 to 100 years forecast is our global supply. We, Americans consume about 20.6 million barrels of petroleum per day (7.5 billion barrels per year). Currently, about 70% of the petroleum we consume is used for transportation. Light duty vehicles and freight trucks take the...

The Gift of Thrift

Image
We are now at 8 billion people. Everyday we can celebrate life on this fragile planet with ingenuity.  Otherwise humans will waste away. Essentially we have to downsize because our very size imperils our survival.  Less will be more if we wisely embrace the gift of thrift.  Saving not consuming benefits all. It is evident that weird weather imperils our well-being and planetary health. Already at least 4 billion people’s daily lives are threatened by climate change from heat waves, diseases, extreme weather, air pollution and starvation. Let’s embrace conservatism in all facets of our life.  Better resource management can renew dangerous waste.  New economic opportunities are bountiful if we counter our self destructive consumption.    Kindly do your part to make this world more livable and enjoy this precious resource. Preserve and conserve- celebrate everyday treating all things as sacred.  Re-design and fostering more sustainable r...

Health Carelessness

One year ago I buried my Dad. I spent 5 years taking him to doctors and lessening excess costs and procedures.  Years ago, the Post referred to him as “the unobtrusive shaper of law.” For over 37 years he wrote major healthcare legislation as a Congressional Research Service branch head and a staff member on the House Ways and Means Committee helping with all forms of healthcare legislation.  Today our system is careless. America's medical care system is complex.  U.S. total healthcare expenditure is $2.7 trillion or 18 percent of GDP.  It is forecast to reach 34 percent of GDP by 2040.  In 2010 Americans spent $1.3 trillion on healthcare. Multiple chronic illness cases that are just one percent of healthcare expenditure consume 21 percent of this total amount.  The last tier of 50 percent of patients accounted for 2.8 percent of spending last year.  Contrary to popular opinion only 10 percent of healthcare dollars are spent in the last year of life....
